May 11 – Listener Appreciation

It’s the annual “Listener Appreciation Show” at Great River Radio. We ask you for your best of, your favorite, your heavy rotation for the last nine months. You respond with a number of thoughtful, rockin’, tender and mostly shame-free selections. As usual, you did not disappoint. We tweaked and culled the list from dozens of requests, and have come up with a great playlist for this afternoon. You’ll hear tracks from The Avett Brothers, Phantogram, Mason Jennings, Peter Wolf, Dessa, The XX, Neko Case, Mumford & Sons, Dawes, Cults, The Big Pink, The Twilight Hours, Brother Ali and many more.

We also have an “In Memoriam” set of music from talented artists who have passed this last year: Lena Horne, Vic Chesnutt, Alex Chilton and Les Paul.

And as always, we’ll have a couple of new songs – from Jeremy Messersmith and M.I.A. –  that have us looking forward to summer.

This show is our way of saying “Thank You for Listening!” Every week we try to bring you a thoughtful and entertaining set list of music. We spend a lot of time between shows digging up new releases and rarities, reading music blogs and tuning into favorite shows at KUST, KCRW, The Current, KEXP and other indie stations around the country. But in the words of Sinéad O’Connor, “Nothing Compares to U.” Great River Radio listeners give as much as they get … at least when it pertains to new music. So many of the great artists we introduce to you are brought to our attention from fellow listeners – through calls for requests, unsolicited CDs in mailboxes and links to funky websites. And for that, we want to say … Thanks!

Join us today from 4-6 p.m. (CST) for the “Listener Appreciation Show,” and next week for our final show of the season when Dan and Brian play their favorite tracks from the last year.

May 4 – Moody

I’ll take a quiet life…
with no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises,
no alarms and no surprises,
Silence, silence.
–  “No Surprises” by Radiohead

Ok, if you aren’t in the business of educating the people of America, you are probably not quite as focused on these frantic weeks of May as those of us who are (in the business of educating the people of America.)  We approach commencement – or perhaps the end of fifth grade – either way, the end is nearing, and the weather being what it is, life is full of tension: study or go outside and run, read or fly a kite?  Write a paper or go dancing in the streets?  Library or a canoe on the river?  Do you yearn for escape? For surprises? For a few moments of silence?

Today, Great River Radio will reflect a variety of moods, from sadness and quiet to boisterous and lively. It’s a spring mix, like fresh new leaves in a salad.

We’ve got new music from the Hold Steady, as well as from one of our favorite 2010 releases, The National’s “High Violet”, from Sweden’s Shout Out Louds and Canada’s Caribou, from our friends Rufus Wainwright, Shelby Lynne, The New Pornographers, Regina Spektor (with her new cover of the above quoted Radiohead song) and, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of one of the greatest albums of the last…well, 35 years, a different take on “Blood on the Tracks.”

Listen: a lot of the music we are playing today is by artists who are COMING TO OUR TOWN!  This would be a great show to listen to if you are desiring to get out and hear some live music in the next few weeks.  Or if you are just in the mood for new, beautiful music to settle you down or to rev you up.  This is the place.  This is Great River Radio.

GRR is planning two more shows to wind up this, our fourth season.  Next week we’ll do another mix of fresh new music and favorites.  On May 18th, we’ll close out the year with our favorite songs from the last season.  (And then we’ll head up to the lake for the summer.)

April 13 – On the Edge

This is a very late reminder – I’ve just learned that Brian is going to be unable to make it to the studio today.  Since I’ve already got about an hour of music to play, I’ve decided to go into the studio at 4 and run through my playlist.

I’ve get lots of new music and some good stuff which I’d love to share with you today.  Peter Wolf, formerly of the J Geils Band, has a new record and I’ll be playing a song he does with the great Shelby Lynne, and I’ll also spin something from the new Jakob Dylan album and a really wonderful song from local band Rogue Valley.  Mix in some old Butterfield Blues Band, Louis Armstrong, The Holmes Brothers and a couple songs dedicated to GRR travels (California and France) and we’ll have a good time.

This is going to be a short but sweet show – we hope you can join us this afternoon, or listen later on the blog.

Next week (I hope) Brian and I will be back in the studio together.  Our theme will be women’s rights around the world  – for KUST’s Social Justice Awareness Week.  If that theme brings to mind any songs, please let us know, either directly via email or on our blog at https://greatriverradio.wordpress.com
