Every morning is a fresh beginning,
Listen my soul to the glad refrain.
And, spite of old sorrows
And older sinning,
Troubles forecasted
And possible pain,
Take heart with the day and begin again.

Happy New Year from Great River Radio!  We are coming back to you this afternoon with our favorites (we aren’t going to use the word ‘best’ for this list) from 2012.  It was a very good year for music, in our opinion.  From a long list of great songs, we’ve come up with a playlist that you’re going to love.

If you’ve been listening and paying attention to GRR in the last year, you’ll know many of these songs, but I guarantee that you’ll hear some things that will be new to you, as well.  Nick Waterhouse and Australia’s Tame Impala will kick the show off with energy and their neo sounds of R&B and psychedelia.  Trampled By Turtles, The Pines and Chastity Brown will represent the many local artists who had a good year in 2012.  The old masters will be represented by Leonard Cohen, Greg Brown, Dr. John and Mr. Bruce Springsteen.  Young artists we saw and loved last year are on this list, too, including Patrick Watson, John Fullbright and Field Report. And if you are expecting Dylan, here is what I’ll do for you:  two of the best Dylan covers I’ve ever heard.

I think you’ll like this show – and let me know what you loved in 2012 that I missed.

This afternoon on Great River Radio, coming to you from the University of St. Thomas’ KUST.

Tune in live, or listen later on the blog.

October 31 – Catching Up (701)

[audio http://personal.stthomas.edu/drgjelten/shows/GRR701.mp3]

O they tell me of a home far beyond the skies,
O they tell me of a home far away;
O they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise,
O they tell me of an unclouded day.

After a longer than usual summer hiatus, Great River Radio will return today with new music for you.  We have been very busy with the start of school and some other complications this fall, but are anxious to renew our (few, but high quality) relationships with you, our GRR family.

Dan will be in the studio this afternoon, getting reacquainted with the buttons and knobs and plugs and dials, and hopefully all will be easy on me.  The playlist includes the song above, an old hymn which we have a new recording of by Audra Mae (perhaps you remember her from last spring – she is Judy Garland’s great grand niece.)  This song might actually set in motion a set of tunes about good places and broken places…we’ll see.

And there will be a set of songs about going leaving home and going home.  Sarah Jarosz will kick it off with “Run Away” and Michael Kiwanuka will close it up with “Home Again” and in between, we’ll hear from The Tallest Man on Earth and Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors.

In the middle of the show, some songs from the summer we liked (hey, we’re catching up here), including music from The Lumineers, Shovels and Rope, Daughn Gibson, Fiona Apple and Sweden’s Anna Ternheim.

One of the highlights of the last few weeks was meeting and visiting with John Fullbright, out of Okemah, OK, when he came through town, playing the Prairie Home Companion and a later show at the Cabooze.  He has written a couple of songs that just knocked us out and we’ll be playing one of them tonight.  Is he Randy Newman’s successor?  Maybe. Not that Randy needs a successor.  But, ok, if you love Randy Newman, you have to check this smart and funny and talented young man out.  We’ve got one from him that is an absolute jewel.

You may be disappointed to know that there isn’t one Halloween related song on the show.  For that we apologize.

Tune in this afternoon, or later on the blog.
