December 5 – Lighthouse in the Woods (703)

light in the woods

Leave a light on in the wild
Cause I’m coming in a little blind
Dreamer of a lighthouse in the woods
Shining a little light to bring us back home
Went to find you in the backyard
Hiding behind our busy lives
Dreamer of a lighthouse in the woods
To help us get back into the world
Cause I know I’ve seen you before
Won’t you shine a little light on us now?
Won’t you shine a little light in your own backyard?
Won’t you shine a little light in your own backyard?
Dreamer of a lighthouse in the woods

            Patrick Watson “Lighthouse”

It is getting dark and colder as we approach the end of the year and the end of the school term.  At the same time, we approach the holidays, which offer many a kind of lighthouse at this time of year.  It is certain to get busier over the coming days and weeks and this afternoon Great River Radio hopes to offer you a little calm before the chaos, a little light and warmth this chilly afternoon.

We saw Patrick Watson open his show last weekend with “Lighthouse” and it was unforgettable, he at the piano with little lights on his fingers but otherwise playing in darkness.  It was beautiful and impressionistic and the rest of the show continued to be riveting.  We’ll hear that track this afternoon, along with new music from Cat Power, Tame Impala, and Iris DeMent and husband Greg Brown from their new and well regarded records.  We’ll also go back to a few favorites from the year, as we anticipate those year-end best of lists and our own 2012 faves show which we hope to do in January.  Candidates for my list will include Leonard Cohen, The Tallest Man on Earth, The Pines and Michael Kiwanuka.

I’m also enjoying a couple newer discoveries, North Carolina’s Delta Rae (with a wonderful song “Forgive the Children We Once Were”) and LA’s Lavender Diamond.

Yesterday, The New Standards released their latest collection and we’ll listen to their lovely version of Arcade Fire’s “No Cars Go.”

That and more this afternoon on Great River Radio, coming to you from the University of St. Thomas’ KUST Radio.

Tune in this afternoon, or later on the blog.
