April 6 – Aural Transcendence

Vic Chesnutt

As many of you already know, we are celebrating our 5th season of Great River Radio this year. Putting the show together every week is a labor of love. We spend most of our week reading blogs, seeing live music and collecting songs to share with you on Wednesday afternoons. Some setlists come together easily, and others take weeks of preparation. For instance, in March 2011 we did a show on the history of a song (http://bit.ly/e4Aykm), Dan had an incredible show about musicians and their guitars (http://bit.ly/eKcsnS), we had a
follow-up to our well-received “History of the Blues” show from December 2007 (http://bit.ly/h7QP6D), and last week we celebrated the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day with a eclectic mix of music from women around the world (http://bit.ly/e0JUNe). The time and effort to pull these shows together has really paid off, as the Great River Radio website experienced its highest monthly traffic since we launched the site back in October 2008. All thanks to you, our listeners.

While the themed shows are tremendously rewarding to produce, we have often stressed the importance of “discovery” when listening to music. There are times when we begin haphazardly collecting music for an upcoming show – often a mix of new releases and classic tracks that have drifted back to our consciousness – when the songs suddenly merge into a cohesive playlist. The process is akin to selecting “shuffle” on your iPod, leading you to experience a sort of aural transcendence. Somehow, music karma has captured your mood in ways you could not verbalize. That unpredictability – that discovery – is the beauty of music.

We’ll try to capture that mood for you today, as we bring you a thoughtful playlist of new music from Bright Eyes, Toro Y Moi, the Verve’s Richard Ashcroft, Yuck, Lucinda Williams, Death Cab for Cutie, Low, solo work from Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Buffalo Tom, Shemekia Copeland and the North Mississippi Allstars. In the mix will be past tracks from Tom Waits, Jo Dee Messina, Patty Griffin, Cat Power and Vic Chesnutt.

Join us for an afternoon of music. Stream us in the background or listen later by clicking the play button below the image above (all shows available after 6 p.m.).

Peace.
