As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: “Bread and roses! Bread and roses!”
As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women’s children, and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!
– James Oppenheim
In March of 1911, a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York City took the lives of 146 women garment workers who were unable to escape the building because managers had locked the doors to the stairs and exits. The tragedy, one of the worst industrial accidents in U.S. history, lead to new safety standards, legislation and unions which advocated on behalf of workers, and women’s rights. A few days before the fire, International Women’s Day had been celebrated in a few European countries where more than a million women and men attended IWD rallies to campaign for women’s rights to work, vote, be educated and elected. The Triangle disaster made International Womens’ Day a truly global phenomenon. James Oppenheim’s poem became a rallying cry for the women’s movement.
This year, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of IWD and today on Great River Radio we join the party by taking a global tour of music by women, covering our favorite artists from Africa, the Caribbean, the British Isles, Scandinavia, continental Europe, Canada and Australia. You’ll hear great songs by Miriam Makeba, Angelique Kidjo, Lykke Li, Ane Brun, PJ Harvey, Feist, Portishead and even the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic.
Help GRR celebrate the achievements of women during the last 100 years with song today!
Join us at 4:15 p.m. (CST) today for Great River Radio.
