Nov. 10 – Human Trafficking

Well you better listen my sisters and brothers,
‘cause if you do you can hear
there are voices still calling across the years.
And they’re all crying across the ocean,
and they’re cryin’ across the land,
and they will ‘til we all come to understand.

None of us are free.(if) one of us are chained
(Solomon Burke – “None of Us Are Free”)

It’s Social Justice Awareness Week here at KUST. As a service project, the station sponsors a week of social justice programming to raise awareness about some of the most pressing social issues in our world. Past topics covered by Great River Radio include employment rights, clean water, health care and criminal rights. Today we will talk about the disturbing increase in human trafficking.

Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery primarily for the use of prostitution or forced labor. With estimates of more than 30 million slaves, it is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. And it’s an increasing problem in the United States and even here in Minnesota. According to yesterday’s StarTribune, “Twenty-nine people, mostly from the Twin Cities, are accused of running an interstate human trafficking ring that sold Somali girls — one as young as 12 — into prostitution. In a federal indictment made public in Nashville on Monday, officials accused gang members of running a decade-long prostitution business that included credit card fraud and burglary totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars. Their alleged crimes crossed state lines, as investigators say girls were driven from the Twin Cities to Nashville and Columbus, Ohio. Another victim was allegedly sexually assaulted in Seattle.”

As usual, we’ll be playing a number of songs that address this critical issue. You’ll hear music from Bruce Springsteen, Marvin Gaye, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Suzanne Vega, Tears for Fears, Solomon Burke, Justin Dillon, Five for Fighting, Ben Harper, Switchfoot, The Smiths and the Children of Agape. In between these powerful music selections we will offer a few statistics on human trafficking, talk about pending legislation and point you to a couple of organizations that are doing excellent advocacy work in this field.

While we realize that this may not be the most uplifting topic – few social justice issues are – we promise that the show will be engaging and informative.

Please join us this afternoon.
