May 19 – Best Songs of the year

It is finals week on the UST campus and all the seats in the library are occupied as students seek “blear –eyed wisdom out of midnight oil” as Yeats puts it in “Among School Children.” In a few days, the campus will be quiet again for the summer. Speaking of great poetry, we are also reminded of Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” – “Well we got no class/And we got no principles/And we got no innocence/We can’t even think of a word that rhymes”

Ah, yes.

This will be the final show for Great River Radio this season. We’ve had a wonderful time meeting together in the dim studio of KUST every week and chatting and playing our favorite music. We have now been putting together GRR since November 15, 2006 – nearly 100 shows. There is a lot to say about how the show has evolved and developed, but the main goal has stayed the same – to play the music we like and that we think you will like. We have some special ideas for the coming fall when we will celebrate the 100th episode of Great River Radio.

For today, though, we are going to be playing favorites from the last season – we’ve asked for your requests and we’ve received them. We’re going to pack as much music in today as possible – less talk, more music, yes. If you’re studying, or writing a paper, or grading a paper, or taking care of year end duties, today’s show will provide your soundtrack. Expect songs from Fleet Foxes, The Ting Tings, Phoenix, Michael Franti, The Hold Steady, Rachael Yamagata, Gospel Gossip, The Bird and the Bee, Beck and Beirut, among many others. This will be a great show.

Join Great River Radio live today at 4-6 p.m. (CST) via the KUST stream: (click on “Listen Live” in the upper-right-hand corner)
