March 17, 2009 – Music from Iowa to Ireland (and Beyond)

You can never hold back spring
You can be sure that I will never
Stop believing
The blushing rose will climb
Spring ahead or fall behind
Winter dreams the same dream
Every time

You can never hold back spring
Even though you’ve lost your way
The world keeps dreaming of spring

So close your eyes
Open your heart
To one who’s dreaming of you
You can never hold back spring

Remember everything that spring
Can bring
You can never hold back spring
(Tom Waits)

It is St. Patrick’s Day and the Minnesota winter seems to be giving way to spring again. It is hard not to be happy and hopeful, and when we are happy and hopeful we turn again to music.

We’ve got lots of great songs for you today, from Beirut, The Avett Brothers, Bettye LaVette, The Decemberists, The Hold Steady and Steve Earle. We’ll have some Irish bands (including a great tune from The Guggenheim Grotto) and a set from some Scandinavian artists. There will be new music from local band Greycoats, Camera Obscura, St. Vincent and the third most famous Elvis in the business (Perkins). We even have a tune from Iowan (William Elliott Whitmore.) Any show that features musicians from Ireland, Sweden and Iowa has to be worth listening to.

Join us this afternoon as you prepare to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, or as you simply wind down another happy Tuesday. And remember that you can listen to the show tomorrow or any other time at the GRR blog.

Join Great River Radio live 4-6 p.m. (CST) today via the KUST stream:
