Why do we like music? Is it out of admiration for an artist’s skills? For those fans who are musicians themselves, is it a shared sense of community? Is it about music as a soundtrack for our lives? Or are there times when we just need a raging beat and a sick dance groove? The answer is probably an elixir of all of the above.
Author Nick Hornby has been writing about our connection with music for decades, and I think he’s onto something: “I love the relationship that anyone has with music: because there’s something in us that is beyond the reach of words, something that eludes and defies our best attempts to spit it out. It’s the best part of us, probably, the richest and strangest part.” -Nick Hornby, Songbook.
Whatever our motivations, Dan and I gather at the KUST studio every Tuesday afternoon for one purpose: To spin some of the catchiest tracks that have seeped into our earbuds in the last week. Today is no exception.
We have mini themes like a send off to SXSW – featuring Jeremy Messersmith, Haley Bonar and Solid Gold. We have some strong female vocal performances by Karen O. of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sharon Jones, St. Vincent, Neko Case and Anni Rossi.
We have a Radiohead – Dave Brubek mash-up, and another song featuring Swede phenom, Lykke Li. And Dan continues his ukulele fascination with a selection from Jake Shimabukuro.
Now, that’s some darn good music to help us all define that “something in us that is beyond the reach of words.”
