“In the record industry, a single is a song usually extracted from a current or upcoming album to promote the album. Singles are distributed through a number of ways; originally, they were packaged as “single” records with one or two other songs and sold before the release of the album. However, this practice has lessened as the Internet has made music more readily available to the public free of charge. Also, singles are commonly played on the radio, and with the advent of music videos in the 1980s, video versions of singles have become a common way of distributing the song to the public.” –

In January 2007, 89.3 The Current DJ Mark Wheat announced to the world that the album was dead. His view was that in the age of downloads, leaks and direct distribution between musicians and their fans, full length CDs no longer mattered (a spirited discussion from his December 2007 assessment can be found here:

History will be the judge, but one thing is sure – the single is alive and well. Tonight on Great River Radio we’ll be spinning some of our favorite songs from 2008. You’ll hear MGMT, Delta Spirit, DeVotchKa, Rachael Yamagata, the Ting Tings, Black Kids, Michael Franti, M.I.A., Santogold, Fleet Foxes, Conor Oberst, My Morning Jacket and Shelby Lynn. We’ll also play some great tunes from the local scene by Romantic, The New Standards and The Hold Steady. Sounds like fun, no?

We also are asking you to continue to post your favorite songs/albums from 2008 in the thread above titled “Your Favorites from 2008.” We hope to pull together a playlist from those suggestions for an upcoming show.
