Here we are, living through an economic crisis that is complex and scary. But we also are experiencing the most beautiful weather of the year – the leaves are colorful, the sky deep blue, and grass is green again from fall rain. There is a disconnect between the bad news we hear all day and the lovely mornings we wake up to (and the peaceful, cool evenings as we fall asleep). There must be a lesson here – perhaps we just need to let go of worries. As a gift to GRR listeners, we send you this suggestion for coping during these troubling days:

Give up the world; give up self; finally, give up god.
Find god in rhododendrons and rocks,
passers-by, your cat.
Pare your beliefs, your absolutes.
Make it simple; make it clean.
No carry-on luggage allowed.
Examine all you have
with a loving and critical eye, then
throw away some more.
Repeat. Repeat.
Keep this and only this:
what your heart beats loudly for
what feels heavy and full in your gut.
There will only be one or two
things you will keep,
and they will fit lightly
in your pocket.

Sheri Hostetler, from the anthology A Cappella: Mennonite Voices in Poetry
